Apex North Carolina - Yesterday
Apex was first settled around 1867 and was incorporated in 1873. The downtown reflects the town's rich historical beginning. The name "Apex" was adopted because the community was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida.First chartered in 1854, the Apex railroad station was "for the purpose of affecting a communication between the North Carolina Railroad Company (at Raleigh) and the coal fields of Chatham County." Because of war and problems with reconstruction, the first locomotive did not pass through Apex until 1869.
A community soon developed around the station. Before long, Apex became an active center of trading and shopping. As forests gave way to farm land, the community grew and when disease devistated many tobacco farmers in Person and Granville counties at the turn of the century, these farmers found suitable land around Apex for tobacco production and settled here. The first Wake County tobacco auction market was established in Apex in 1905.
Apex grew slowly through the decades, despite several devastating fires, including one in 1912 which destroyed most of the downtown business district. The town center was rebuilt and still stands to this day as one of the most intact railroad towns in the state. At the heart of town stands the Apex Union Depot, the original passenger station for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and later, home to the Apex Community Library. The depot now houses the Apex Chamber of Commerce.
Apex stalled a bit during the Depression-era, but growth began again in the 1950s. The town's position in proximity to North Carolina's Research Triangle Park spurred additional residential development, yet the town managed to preserve its small-town character. Still, during the 1990s, the town's population quadrupled to over 20,000, placing unprecedented demands upon Apex's infrastructure.
Apex North Carolina – Today
Located in southwestern Wake County, Apex combines a relaxing small-town atmosphere with the convenience to big-city amenities. In 1994 Apex was named the state's #1 Small Town in economic vitality by Business North Carolina magazine. In October, 2006, a chemical fire in an Apex waste processing facility generated worldwide headlines when much of the town was temporarily evacuated. Fortunately, there were few serious injuries, and residents were soon able to return home.
Apex was ranked 14th on a July 2007 CNN/Money magazine list of the nation's top 100 small towns. It is positioned for future growth and the town planners are working to ensure that the small-town character remains while allowing for many new residents to join our community.
A major streetscape renovation project has restored Apex's downtown and recaptured its historic flavor. The revitalized downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best examples of an intact turn-of-the-century railroad town.
Hundreds of newcomers today are discovering this delightful small town and choose to relocate to Apex daily. If you are one of our new residents getting settled into this community, you will quickly see why the Apex town motto is "Peak of Good Living".
